bill murray sings bob dylan’s “shelter from the storm”

I get mesmerized by this video. Maybe it’s the Dylan song I never heard before that kinda makes me want to Commit To Bob Dylan. Or Bill Murray, who continues to be a completely unique person and fascinates me, and also said this amazing quote: “The more relaxed you are, the better you are at everything.” Or maybe it’s the photography, the whole video done in one shot that doesn’t move and captures the beauty of an ignored house.

postcard from: edinburgh: skeleton keys

In Duddingston, we found our little pub and sat in a corner surrounded by books. The door was covered in skeleton keys, which prompted an impassioned debate about what exactly is a skeleton key.

Hubby’s position: Skeleton keys are master keys that open any door.
My position: Skeleton keys are those old-fashioned iconic keys with markings at the end of the shaft.
Sister K’s position: Don’t care, why does this matter?

The verdict: My hubby and I were both right (and so was my sister). Skeleton keys can be master keys, or also keys shaped like the ones pictured above.

When we saw Hal Sparks, he talked about how everyone in Edinburgh uses skeleton keys (it’s true, they do), and how strange this seems to an American. Skeleton keys have so few teeth, their locks are very easy to pick. Basically, you could break into any Edinburgher’s house with a couple of bobby pins.

But they’re pretty! I like a culture that knows how to throw caution to the wind in favor of beauty.
